Diabetes is generally a long-term condition affecting more than 21 million people in the United States. Proper individualized management including dietary adjustments, regular exercise, attention to self monitoring and appropriate medication will control elevated blood glucose levels and should serve to prevent long-term complications.
The most common disorders include thyroid nodules, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Most thyroid nodules are benign and can be managed without surgery. Hypothyroidism will respond to individualized thyroid hormone replacement while hyperthyroidism is almost always controllable with medication. Estrogen and testosterone deficiencies are treated with appropriate replacement therapy when indicated.
High blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels are easily detectable and in most instances can be controlled with proper medications. It is important to choose drugs at dosage level that are less likely to cause side effects. The earlier the intervention, the greater the likelihood of reducing long-term cardiovascular risk and mortality.
